Introduction to Microsoft Word

Prerequisite: Students should understand the concepts in the Computer Basics series of classes (particularly using the keyboard and saving and organizing files) before taking this class.

Students will learn to create and save documents, format text and paragraphs, use the spell checker, insert pictures, add headers and footers, create a table of contents, modify margins and page orientation, and add tables.

Register beginning April 1 by calling 770-347-0160. Check in with instructor before class begins. Please be on time - any open seats at the beginning of class will be given to students that are present and standing by.

If you are not registered for a class, you are welcome to come to the class and check in with the instructor 10-15 minutes before the class starts. At the beginning of class the instructor will see how many seats are available and given them to the students that are waiting.

Students will learn to create flyers, newsletters, business cards, or other print materials by using and modifying templates or by starting from scratch.

Introduction to Email

Prerequisite: Students should understand the concepts in the Computer Basics series of classes (particularly using the mouse and keyboard and using the web) before taking this class.

Students will learn to create and send email messages, save and organize received messages, attach files to messages, store contact information, add email signatures, and distinguish between valid email and spam. Students will have the opportunity to create their own free email accounts if they do not already have one of their own.

Job Hunting and Skill-Building Lab

Use lab time to write or update your resume, search for jobs, fill out online job applications, or work on improving your computer skills by taking online classes through Job & Career Accelerator or practice tests through Learning Express.

This lab is open on a first come-first served basis (no advance registration required). Check in with the instructor when you arrive in order to access a computer.

The instructor will be available to assist you with basic questions and help you get to the right website or program for your needs. However, all participants should already have basic computer skills and be able to access their own email accounts. Any participant that does not have these skills should attend the Computer Basics series of classes - contact the instructor for details.

This lab time does not count against your normal daily computer use time. However, this ***LAB TIME IS NOT TO BE USED FOR NON-JOB OR NON-SKILL-BUILDING ACTIVITIES*** such as Facebook, YouTube, checking personal email, or playing online games. If you have any questions about what you can use this lab time for, please contact the instructor.

Right From the Start/Medicaid (RSM)

Each month on the last Saturday, a member of the Right From the Start/Medicaid (RSM) team will be at a table inside the library, near the front art display, to answer questions and/or to take initial applications for Medicaid from pregnant women and families with children.

Please note that final approval cannot be given on the day of the application, but the application process can be started. If you have general questions about Medicaid, please call the RSM office at 770 473 2605.

Computer Basics Series

This series of six classes beginning June 3 is designed for adults who have little or no experience using computers. Students will learn basic concepts and get hands-on practice. Students may take this series of classes more than once if needed. Students sign up for the entire series at once. Any student that wishes to begin the series after Part 1 is over must obtain prior permission from the instructor.

Part 1: Introduction to Computers
Learn about the basic parts of a computer, practice using the mouse, open programs and work with multiple program windows, learn to sign up to use the library’s public computers.

Part 2: Introduction to Word Processing
Learn about the keyboard, create and edit documents, format text, copy and paste, and understand the difference between Notepad, WordPad, and Word.

Practice Lab (optional)
Practice mouse skills and/or improve typing speed and accuracy.

Part 3: Saving and Organizing Files
Create and save documents, find, organize, rename, and delete files and folders, and utilize a flash drive. Students are encouraged to bring a Flash drive (optional).

Parts 4 and 5: Introduction to the Web
How to navigate to specific web sites, use search engines, save favorite sites, and take basic online safety precautions.
